Process for switching from normal DirecTV receiver to High-Def DirecTV receiver?

James asked:

I want to replace a standard DirecTV receiver (black D10) to a high-def Hughes H10 receiver. Can I simply take the access card from my current receiver and put it in the new one? I ask because it seems the units without access cards are a little cheaper on eBay. I already have an activated H10 in my house (with the high-def package), so will I have to do anything to get high-def programming on my new one?

Be very careful with eBay. The purchase of satelite equipment there is not always honest and smooth one. First, call DirecTV and inform them about your upgrade decision., they will give you detailed instruction how you should proceed.

Well directv receivers are way too complicated.
For instance if u buy a receiver for me that ive used, and the last months bill was not payed, intentional or not, that box cannot be activated again unless that ammount is paid for.
And some of the boxes have newer type of cards so ur card may not fuction properly with the new box.

so save urself the headache and just buy a new box. why? well u dont just need the HD box u will also have to upgrade to a HD dish.

Most of the times DTV will do this for u for free.

You can pair the old card to a new receiver. It is a simple process, all you need to do is call directv and they will get the manufacturer, model#, serial# and receiver id. They can change it in the system. 1-800-531-5000. You will be required to get the hd package for a year commitment and upgrade your dish to a 5lnb.
