I bought my DirectTV dvr receiver from Best Buy and had no problem activating it. Just connect the audio/video cables and let the satellite download any necessary software. There shouldn’t be any extra charges on your bill since you own the device outright and are not “renting” it from DirectTV.
PS. I wont be needing that key code you gave me. I think you know what I’m talking about. Thanks for your help.

yes, you can activate it on your account. I just want to make you aware of a few of things:
First, just because you’re paying for a DirecTV receiver doesn’t mean you’re BUYING it. You could be leasing it, so be sure to read the terms of the sale.
Second, if you’re buying used equipment, you will need to purchase a new access card for $20 by calling DirecTV themselves. This is non-negotiable and a good idea. You never know, the person you purchase the receiver from may have up to $200 in pay per view purchases that are not reported that you would be responsible for if you were to activate the receiver on your account.
Third, even if you own the receiver, you may still pay a $4.99 fee for the receiver. It’s called a mirroring fee, and you get charged it regardless of a leased or owned status of the receiver (the names are different, and it’s a misnomer if you lease the receiver — read the back of your bill for more info). The only way you don’t get the fee is if you were a Primestar customer before it was aquired by DirecTV and you had owned your equipment during the transition.
